Cruse Control 200 1989

Had Cruise Control on the '86 240 that I handed down to my son, I loved it.
My "new" '89 wagon has no cruise and I miss it on my 75-mile commute.

Am willing to work hard in the "pick and pull" junkyard,
and under the dash to put in cruise control.

Anyone who knows what different versions there were,
what years used on, etc. -

I would appreciate any information to steer me to the right year's cars to get parts from.

I already have some parts, but don't know what year car they were from, or if they are correct for mine.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to B.C., Jessie and rhiare.

Keep it coming - I'm sure others have more to write on this.

rhaire, you're right of course, I gave a low-resolution description of the '86-89 Cruise Control. The one on my '86 (son is now driving it) has a 2-part firewall unit as you described.

From what's been written here, it looks like that design would fit the '89 without modification. Others might fit with mod. kits, pedal changes, etc.

I'm curious to read how Jessie's installation works out.

Cruse Control Instructions 200 1989

I installed a cruise control unit from eBay into my 1988 244GL. The seller provided me with a full set of Volvo Instructions. Invaluable.

email me direct if you want a copy, postage cost only.

Bob

You need the 86-89 cruise. No vacuum pump, fairly complicated to install. One additional rare set to consider is the firewall mounted vacuum pump type cruise that will work on 86-89 cars, but uses a system more like the 90-93 240s use. But like I said, the latter is hard to find, whereas the former is easy to get. In 90, cruise got a lot easier to install on 240s.

Seems like you're familiar with several versions.

Does below describe the 86-89 version you mentioned:
My '86 with Cruise Control has a firewall-mounted "thing" - a black cylinder about 5 inches long, with one rounded end, near center of the firewall, just under the windshield. Is that the 86-89 version you know?
Do you know is this a vacuum pump or just a vacuum chamber??

Does this version with black cylinder fit directly into the '89?

The later version - I think I have parts for this version, in a bag -
Do the parts from the 90-93 version fit directly into the '89?
Or are you talking about a CC for the '89 that is LIKE the 90-03 type??

Thanks,
Bruce

Well, that is a pretty low resolution description but it is a system with a two-part firewall vacuum cannister on the firewall, storing vacuum from the intake (no vacuum pump). And like I said, 86-89 only, no 90-on cruise parts fit an 89 UNLESS you have the rare kit which is powered by an electrical vacuum pump. That kit uses some of the 90-on stuff but you must have the kit.

You need the type that is on your 86, but I am pretty sure you could install the 90 to 93 cruise on an 89. I am in the process of putting 91 cruise on my 89. I have not finished it yet so I can't tell you for sure if it works. Both later types use the same speed signal as far as I can tell. They both tap into the speed signal to the LH control unit. On the 86 to 89 version it plugs into the instrument panel. On the 90 and later it splices into the wire from the instrument panel to the LH unit.

You have to change gas pedals to use the 90 to 93 on an 89. Not a big job if you have the pedal.
