auto trans. filler tube 200 1989

What's the trick to getting the ATF filler tube off of the pan? I assume this is just a compression fitting where I unscrew the outer nut while holding the inner nut? Problem is my new box-end wrench set only goes up to 19mm, so all I have is an adjustable wrench for the smaller outer nut and a big pipe wrench for the larger inner nut. And of course the thing won't budge. It's soaking with the PBlaster now, but does anybody have any bright ideas for me to get this thing off?

On the recalcitrant A/T filler tube joint at the pan, use either:

1. Big heat, as acetylene -- says my local transmission shop

-- or --

2. A hacksaw, says I. There's NO pressure on the tube, it will never leak after you put it back together. Cut it. Do your job. When done, clean up your cut, and connect with hose and hose clamps. Use 4" of hydraulic hose, if you want to feel great about it (local hose shop may well donate it to you for laughs), and double clamp (2 clamps each end) if you feel you have really violated the part.

Too many people have wasted too much time on this *(&^*(&^ part!

My $0.02, but worth slightly more than that, in THIS case.

This is in the 700/900 FAQ. The fill tube inserts into the larger nut on the pan, then the lock nut secures it. The lock nut should slip back up the tube, away from the pan, and you then twist the tube out of the pan. If this does not work, remvoe the bracket up by the starter and take out the entire assembly, pan and tube.

Why the ATF tube? 200 1989

I used to be religious about dropping the pan to replace the filter screen. Never - NEVER - found a dirty one, so I stopped looking. Then I learned that Volvo doesn't think it's worth the effort either, per this Technical Service Bulletin posted by Gregg Shadduck on Feb. 10, 2005...

I'm not replacing fluid. I'm putting in a new kickdown cable so I have no choice.

I finally got the outer nut loosened (bought a second 14" pipe wrench and the two of them did the trick), but now it won't back out all of the way! What's up with this fitting? Am I supposed to remove the larger nut also, or is that part of the pan?

The "larger nut" is definitely part of he pan. If that moves, the pan is damaged.

You may have to go up the tube and loosen a holding bracket, but that's just a guess. Haven't done the job in years. Maybe corrosion build-up on tube is preventing the smaller nut from backing up???

I finally got it off. No secret, I just needed to use gorilla strength on the two pipe wrenches after letting the PBlaster work for an hour or so. Between that and the bitch of a time I had getting the end of the kickdown cable fastened inside the tranny, I hope I won't do this ever again. Thanks for all your help.

Yeah, I think I read here sometime ago that someone recommended removing that holding bracket to get the pan off.

Check the archives, I bet it's in there...
