Starts, idles, stumbles, then dies; no restart 700 1990

Help?

My future Mother-In-Law's 740 Regina/Bendix b230f starts when cold, stumbles at idle for about 1 minute, then dies and will not restart. Battery is new. I get a 3-2-1 cold start valve code which I understand can be the "radio suppression relay" on Regina cars? Is this relay the power supply for the injectors? Is there a definative way to test it? I get voltage to the CS injector and have replaced it with no results. Also get a 1-2-1 pressure sensor code.
Thanks for any insights,
Vulva (hick pronounciation for Volvo)

ps- I previously discovered the coil wire extremely loose underneath the distributor, and reconnected it. Could this condition have fried something?

Joe - As I'm sure you know, "Vulva" has another, more clinical meaning. You may want to reconsider your alias or at least consider changing the spelling. Some folks on the Board, especially the ladies, might be offended.

On the other hand, the alias certainly grabs one's attention when scanning the list of posts!

Nicknames 700 1990

Glen I agree 100% with you. First thought was what the future mother-in-law would think. But I click on his posts mainly to see what others say about his choice of screen name.

Your 3-2-1 code may be 'False' 700 1990

This is based on Service Bulletin # 135 from January 1990 (applicable to '89 and '90 740 and 740GL), which says that 3-2-1 may be a false code, due to a circuit modification related to the Cold Start Injector/valve..

As a quick check, peel back the Cold Start connector boot and see if the Blue-Green + wire has been disconnected, taped off, and replaced by another wire (color unknown) directly from the starter solenoid.

If so, you can confirm the modification by checking for continuity from CS pin 2 to starter auxiliary terminal 15a or 16 down on the solenoid. If there is continuity, the RSR is no longer in the CS Injector circuit.

QUOTE: "As a result of this modification . . . Fault code 3-2-1 (cold start injector) will be permanently stored in the self-diagnostic memory. However the Check Engine Light (CEL) will not illuminate."

The 1-2-1 (missing or faulty signal to ECU) is probably the real problem but I have no experience with the pressure sensor. Try reseating the connector, and check any ground connections in the area.

Bruce,

Thanks again for the info. There is a separate wire routed from the starter solenoid up to the CS injector, so I think your scenario is correct. I am going to look into the MAP sensor trouble code (1-2-1). I am also going to try to switch the radio suppression relay with the fan relay if her car has both. Do you know if having a coil wire loose at the distributor could "fry" certain electrical components? Any other ideas of things to check?
thanks again for the help
