Check / cleaning heater core 200 1984

When I picked up this nice Turbo last fall, the heater fan didn't work, nor did warm air flow after the car heated up. So I am wondering if the heater core is OK.
How do I test this now that I have the dash apart for the motor replacement.
I seem to remember seeing something here or on a link of some one who cleaned out their plugged heater core using some kind of clean out method with the core still in the car. Usinf air pressure or something?
The heat valve seems to have a lot of corrosion on it. Any test for this?

If you have doubts about the heater valve, replace it with a non-thermostatic one - that's what Volvo dealers are doing. FCPGroton have them.

Core flush: you may be referring to an old post of mine. I disconnected the hoses at the heater valve and, using a couple of three-foot extensions made from heater hose, rinsed the core back and forth with that "CLR" scale remover available at any grocery store. A lot of crud came out, and more when I connected the garden hose to it and power flushed it. Care needed with this step; the 240 cap is set to limit cooling system pressure to 75kPa (about 11 psi) whereas your house water supply may get to 500kPa (75psi).
