my alternator is dead- i need a new (used) one for a good price and FAST. I am ready with paypal. for an '85 240 DL. it doesn't have to be new or rebuilt, as long as it works and its cheap. I can't find one in any of the j/y and I can't get rebuild stuff in town.

Last week I would have chimed in about brushes, though I see you have already looked for rebuild parts. But over the weekend two of my 240s had alternator problems not fixed by regulator/brush assemblies. Two in one weekend!

You would be much better off having yours rebuilt locally than buying one of the auto parts house's remans. It is hard to imagine a place as large and needfully independent as Anchorage without a Bosch-knowing rebuilder in town.

The brush/regulator assemble sells for around $25. I buy the Transpo brand part number IB354 for my 83 240 with a 0-120-469-567 alternator. The last time I needed one, the auto electric shop was out so the guy soldered in a new set of brushes for $12. Works great. I would not purchase an Autozone rebuilt alternator for any vehicle. jp

brushes - you're wasting your money if you buy another alternator.

Are you sure you don't just need new brushes? An alternator is likely to go through several before it finally dies from other causes. Brushes are a lot cheaper than a used alternator, especially if the brushes are already worn ...
