Electric Fan and Fuel Mileage (an update on the conversion) 200

Well I've done 726 miles and 3 tanks of gas since the electric fan conversion. It took 34.44 galons of fuel to do this which works out to almost exactly 21 mpg. For my car (modified with auto box) and my driving style this is very good. The average before the conversion was mid 19s, and I haven't seen a 21 mpg 3 tank average in town for years if ever. Whe you figure this car routinely sees 5 grand merging onto the freeways and is mid pack at 75-80+ this is darn good mileage. I don't exactly take it easy anywhere else either.

I've decided I'll keep the fan. I had my doubts before, but the fact that the car is so much smoother at cruse and idle, combined with the fuel savings I've changed my mind.

One other thing I like is the fan comes on after I shut it off and gets rid of the heat that builds up in the cooling system and under the hood. You got to figure that when a hot engine suddenly looses it's flow of cooling water there is a spike in the temperature. The fan comes on and runs for a few minutes to bring it back down to < 87ºC, probably a good thing for everthing under the hood.

The electric condensor fan will be put on this weekend if I have time so we'll see what impact that has on AC temps and mileage.
Have a good weekend all.

after fixing three problems the mpg have gone way up 200

the od was sticking fixed that with a 5 minute solder. tune up with wires, plugs ect. Last week put a new fan cluch on, I don't think this helped but I feel better knowing it won't overheat. The third was taking off my powersteering belt because my ac compressor went south. big differene about a 100 miles per tank.

OD and wires will make a difference if they are bad. Sadly all mine are in great shape, 21 with the mods and driving style is about the best I'm going to see in town.

Which 240 is this? Or did you get rid of both of your turbos?

Hi Alex.
All the turbos are gone. I decided you were right about K-Jet. This is the '88 DL.

Electric Fan and Fuel Mileage (an update on the conversion) 200

hello dave,

i just installed a nissens 3 row radiator (used) and a permacool fan which is in the cowling right in front of the the themoviscous fan, which i kept.

i haven't jumped the temp comp pins yet, but i was more concerned with oil temp. water temp needle has dropped slightly.

since i didn't compare the 3 row rad before the fan i don't know the contribution of each, electric fan and 3 row rad.

results are good, though. in the texas heat, 90-91 F so far in a constant drive 60-80 mph and in traffic, the oil temp doesn't exceed 100 C, an improvement over last year.

so whatever, i'm pleased. may be an overkill will 2 fans, but my a/c is certainly cooler, but i haven't measured that either. relay and fuse added, which cuts down on voltage draw, of course.

with 260k miles, i'm watching the heat in my 86 engine.

regards,
byron golden

Electric Fan and Fuel Mileage (an update on the conversion) 200

hi dave, i like your driving style.
im getting 20-21 mpg on my 244 turbo with the same driving habits and some mods. i have it pushing 14 psi with free flowing exaust and its kinda hard to stay off the gas pedal.
i will consider this swap, what fans are you running?
good luck

Electric Fan and Fuel Mileage (an update on the conversion) 200

hi dave, i like your driving style.
One reason I got rid of the 745Ti, at 14psi that thing was lethal. I'd have hurt myself or worse yet someone else.

what fans are you running?
Radiator fan is from a '93 940, with the driver's side cut down to fit the 240 radiator, I rivited the cut off piece back on the trimmed down shroud to make a good seal. The condenser fan is from a '92 240. Temperature sensor is a 92ºC on 87ºC off SAAB unit in an inline SAAB fitting in the upper radiator hose. This controls the low speed side of the 940 fan. I may add a high speed controller later if needed, time is my enemy just now.

The whole thing is written up with a bunch of other folk's comments at

Hi Dave,

Glad to hear that the conversion worked out well for you...I am following in your footsteps when time allows. Did you not have acceptable results with the dual range thermo switch? I still think I am going to use the single thermo switch that you have installed along with a manual dash switch for the higher fan speed. Thanks for posting your findings as this will save much trial and error cycles.

Dave,

Please confirm -
Your temp sensor is in upper rad hose, and controls 940 fan behind rad to run on low speed?

Nothing in your setup causes that fan to run on high?

As I don't have A/C (I live in New England) I won't have the condenser fan to help aid air flow. I'm not sure if low-speed-only on the rear fan will be enough.

Thanks,
Bruce

Yes, so far no high speed, we've had some 90 degree days out here (don't believe the 70s you see on the news for San Diego, that's at the ariport on the bay) and it stayed well within the "normal" range. If you want to be sure, there are 82ºC sensors out there, in fact I have one I won't be using if you want it. There is also an 85º/93º dual range that I may put in.

I'm converting to the later style of power steering pump, the existing PS resevoir (sp?) bracket is going to become a relay station for the fans. This will have to wait for when I have a bit more time.

I never got a chance to put it in. After getting used to seeing the temp gauge rise a bit to where the 92ºC switch cut in, and noticing that no matter how hot the ambient temp was the coolant dropped quickly with the low fan on it just didn't seem as important. I think I'll do the same as you're thinking and just put a manual override for either the high speed or the condensor fan.

I've got 6 days off following a trip next month, I may take the time to play with the dual speed feature then.
