2' SU Carbs 140-160

Can someone on this site advise me as to what year and model volvos came with 2" SU's?....mid 70's?....I'm looking for a set to mount on a Triumph TR3.What is the liklihood of tracking down a pair? Any input appreciated.

Burlen Fuel Systems, google it.

As Rhys said but in other markets the application list grows.

The HS8 was a fairly standardized construction so parts from other applications should be able to be installed to yield whatever you need. Different bushes for the float bowls are available to make the carbs perfectly horizontal, slightly up-tilted, very up-tilted or slightly down-tilted.

My SU listing is not currently at-hand, sorry.

Larger jets can be sourced.

2.2l engine shouldn't need 2" SUs unless you turn very high revs and don't expect to be able to torque out of any corners.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I'm led to believe that the SU carbs are really variable venturi carbs. They will flow upt to the needs of the engine.

For a liter of displacement (2 carbs over 2 liters), a 2" SU really won't give any improvement over a 1 3/4", because the engine can't use any more flow than 1 3/4" will provide.

In addition to what all the other have said... keep in mind the Volvo carbs mount at an angle, and the floats are therefore at an angle as well. As I recall TR3 carb mounting surface is vertical... You need the Jag or Rover carbs, and you can expect to pay for 'em...

If you've got a hot motor in the TR, you'd do well to look into a pair of DCOE Webers I'd think...

Oddly enough, I also have bolted TR3 carbs onto my Volvo... They leaked (as usual) so I never really got to compare them with stock...

What you really need is a pair of HIF6's, they flow a bit more air than the HS6's & go around corners a lot better. I don't think that a Triumph could use all the air that 2" SU's could supply.

I have a pair of 2" HD8 carbs modified by Joe Curto to work on a Volvo
2-carb manifold (which I also opened up to 2"). They have the float
chamber at the same angle as Volvo carbs, ~30° downhill.
I'm willing to negotiate on them and also the modified aluminum B20
manifold, heatshield, etc. E-mail me offline if interested.

The Rover 2000 TC used the HD8 and later the HS8. Stay away from the HS8. Jag also used the HD8, in a slightly different form from the Rover type. If you can find them the Jag HD8 is the way to go. However, a good set of HS6 would make a nearly perfect bolt on to replace the leaky H6's you have presently.
You can e-mail me from my website at www.sucarburetors.com if you need further info or carbs.

What is wrong with the HS8's?

The HS8 as installed on Rover uses the small .090 orifice jet, which limits the choice of needles, and the jet assembly is very specific that carb and is expensive. Rover underjetted them to produce a carb for the 2 litre engine, so they are not a good performance choice. They do have an improved float valve system, but that doesn't make it worth it. The Jag and Rover HD use the .120 jet orifice, with a wide selection of needles, and the standard jet assembly. The Jag HD has a bypass idle system which is easy to adjust and holds a tune very well.

I put .100" jets in my HS8's, I don't recollect them be expensive, but it was a long time ago. I still got them somewhere.

Volvo never used 2" SU's. They have always been 1 3/4". You can probably find a set off of a Jag. They used HD8's. Funny you should ask that question because I used a set of H6's off of a TR3 on my 2.2 liter Volvo 544. They are about an 1" to an 1.5" longer than an HS6 and really improved the low end and midrange grunt of my engine. The throttle response was also improved.

I also tried a set of HD8's from a Jag. They really didn't start to work well untill I was going 80mph or so. Of course I had no access to different needles so I gave up on that project.

Bottom line: The TR3 carbs worked best on my 2.2 Volvo.

Hope this helps. Jim Robinson

Thanx for the info. :-) I might try Rover 2200, I think they had 2" if I can find a set.
