no start sometimes 200 1989

i have been reading faqs and looking thru the posts to find some matching problems but having trouble searching. when trying to start most times it kicks right off smoothly runs nice and no troubles. warm or cold, sometimes not so nice. the starter turns and feels like it runs into a brick wall. dash warning lights almost go out and if i hold the key it may do that multiple times. then it cranks and cranks and doesnt hope to catch. i open the hood and check box for codes on 2 and 6 always 111. wait and eventually it will start 2 minutes or 10 minutes later. the fan belts will screech trying to put juice back in the battery but it will run fine and set no codes. in attempt to fix i have replaced starter, battery, battery terminals, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel injection relay, and lastly the speed sensor behind motor. with each thing replaced it seemed like it made a difference until a few days then same story. except battery, that made no difference at all. sounds like spark happens while piston is moving up and stops it dead. if anyone knows this sound please help!

Sounds like a "dead spot" (no current flow) on your starter. Never heard of it on a Brick....most British cars suffer this, now, and then. But, then you replaced the starter, and it still ahppens. Have you checked your 25 AMP fuse for corrosion (in and out) ? Art may be on target. I'd chase the electrics (all connections/ wires/ cables) on ignition. It may even be a faulty ignition switch.

Let us know what the cure is.

Sounds like a problem I was having with my '85 240DL. Turns out I had a bad distributor cap. The little connection button on the inside of the cap had come loose and eventually fell off. A nice $5 fix for me. Might want to check yours.

Hi Donnie,

Can you recall when this began to happen? Was this a feature of your '89 when you acquired the car? It sounds a lot like a problem that could happen during a clutch replacement or rear seal change. Here's an example in a recent thread where the flywheel or flexplate was shifted in orientation by just one bolt hole. Is yours an auto or a stick?

By the way, if you get to the point where you want to check the flexplate position, post again, I found a way much easier than pulling the starter, given you've already had your crank position sensor changed.
