Thanks.

Shift lock relay - where is it. 200 1993

On the 93 240 wiring harness I'm installing, the plug for this relay lies below the dash, behind the plastic panel on the left of the transmission tunnel. The plug has four wires, one of which is pink (!). I believe the relay is supposed to be clipped to a support in the area.

Since the power goes through the relay to activate the solenoid that unlocks the shift lever, pulling the relay won't do what you want. You'd then have to override the shift lever lock manually rather than by just pushing the brake pedal.

You might find a way to reconnect the relay leads to keep the solenoid activated whenever the ignition is on. The blue-yellow has power from fuse 12 whenever the ignition is on, and the diagram says the yellow wire leads to the solenoid -- but on my loom that wire is white.

How long will the solenoid last? If I were designing it, I'd take account of the fact that it is supposed to be activated once per trip, and for a few seconds each time. But maybe Volvo picked one that is much better than it has to be.

Here's a source for a diagram... 200 1993

It's located at the bottom of the shift linkage (that part on top of the transmission tunnel), based on a diagram I was able to find in Bentley, pg 435-8, under "Shift Lock (1991 and later)".

If you find any more info (like how to inactivate it), please e-mail back to me, as I'd like to rid one of my cars of it. I've had Volvos since 1973, and never had an "unintended acceleration" incident, and I can't get used to having to hit the brake pedal before engaging in forward or reverse. The teasing thing is that this one '93 has this pain operational -- but in another '93 that I own (also used), it doesn't work! I'd like to do whatever was done to the first one, to the second one, but I haven't found out what to do!

By the way, why do you want to know -- are you having a problem?

Hmmm... 200 1993

I've had some experience with shift lock problems, but never had to chase down the relay. However, the green book has it placed behind the dash console along the right support rail, below where you'd find the OD relay and near where the AC delay relay used to hang out. Has a blue red wire and yellow black.

When the solenoid fails to operate, check the brake lights to be sure they are on. If so, the other fuse can be checked by whether or not the snowflake light comes on when you set the AC switch. Two fuses. Most likely the brake light fuse with a stress crack in the middle.

I'm sure disabling this with a functioning solenoid (one not sticky with soft drinks) would mean having the relay apply power at all times with ignition on. This may not be good for the solenoid. Getting rid of the feature altogether would mean surgery on the shifter assembly. Not so appealing. Especially the part about unscrewing it from above the tranny.
