Overdrive light either dim or on 700 1989

I've been driving the '89 740 Turbo for the last couple of days, and it's been running great, with the exception of one problem. The overdrive light (amber arrow) on the dash has been coming on, sometimes dim and sometimes bright. When this happens the car does not shift right. Pressing the button on the gear shifter does not help. It seems to be related to the temp. of the car.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there an easy, or temporary fix? I was thinking of upgrading to a manual gearbox soon.
