I know that I probably ought not to be mucking with my carb setup if I have not yet got the things back to perfect, but I couldn't resist hooking up my newwest mod (just arrive today). I bought a pair of volvo clam-shell air filter boxes on eBay. Both are similar to filter box on my dear departed dual-SU 145 (1972-1997 RIP).
The first has a simple cone-like intake to the airbox and a connector for the PCV hose about midway along the box.
The second box is just the cover (fits the same box) and it has some sort of primitive air-mass-meter thing on the end. It looks to be a temp-controlled flapper that pulls air through one of two openings depending on air-temp. It looks like it might be from an early P1800, or a very early 140 series.
[edit] According to the manual, it's a "Constant Air Temperature Device"
I went ahead and installed the simpler of the two filter boxes on my dual HS6s. I'm well-aware that a bolt *could* vibrate lose and lodge in the carb, but I had the same risk on my old reusable filters and I can live with the possibility.
My questions are these:
1) Is there any way I could use the flapper intake thing on my Amazon, and how would I set it up?
2) Are there any other risks/issues/problems/advantages of using a single filter on a dual carb setup? (Aside that the filter is just $7.00)
3) Do I really need that auxiliary heat shield on the front carb? (goes between the carb and the filter)
4) Can I use rubber gasket material (e.g from the hardware store) between the filter box and carbs? (more durable than cork or paper)
Thanks
