Speedometer Dead 200

Hi,

I have a '84 240, in which the speedometer started acting weird and then died earlier this week. I have had this happen before where it went a bit wonky but then started working fine, but this time it just sits at 0. I also have a strange noise which I haven't been able to pin down coming from the engine but I'm not certain they are related.

Just wanted to know if there were any obvious things to look for on the speedometer issue.
