Electrical gremlin. Like early 240, but 164 1975

I posted this in ALL because my 164 electricals are similar to early 240's, I think.
Last June, I fixed the brake light switch and all was well. Two weeks ago, something happened so that whenever I pulled up on the brake handle, the brake light came on like it was supposed to, but now the brake failure light, alt and oil light also come on. With the car running, I could hear a faint humming or noise coming from the front of the car, left side, whenever I pulled up the lever.
Today, I was trying to isolate my other electrical problem with the engine dying (sometimes) when I shift to reverse. I had the ebrake engaged for about 5 minutes and then I smelled some plastic burning. The engine warning lights went off as well as the ebrake light. The switch at the ebrake handle melted and fell apart. No fuses blown. The red lights on the dash no longer work.
Help.
The 1973 service manual wiring diagram mentions something about a relay, but this car has only 2, the Step relay for headlights and the Start relay. The lights work every where, including the backup lights. The Service manual also memntions a 6-pole connector unit, what ever that is.
I would like to have warning lights when I turn the key to on, so that I know if something is wrong or when the engine stalls while driving, etc.

Thanks,
Klaus
