Wierd AC Problem on 91 740: Suggestions?

My 91 740 ac blows very cold (I'm in S. FL...gotta have it), but occasionally the compressor stops running......it will come on again...cannot detect pattern. Sometimes not working when I turn car off at night and in the morning blowing cold. When it works, its ice cold.

Any suggestions on where to look first? Thanks in advance,
