fiberglass fenders? 120-130

From time to time on ebay or in classifieds I see 122 fiberglas fenders advertized. Other than the obvious elimination of rust issues, is there any other advantage to these? Lighter weight? Were they originally just a cheaper way to fix a dinged fender? Inquiring minds want to know.
