I'd guess that lighter weight might give you a marginal improvement in fuel economy.
I imagine that the main issue is that they are unsavagable after a fender-bender.
But the trade off in rust prevention is probably worth the "disposable" nature of the fenders. My 220's orginal fenders were quite badly rusted. Many for-sale amazons suffer the same fate. I was lucky that the original owner already had new fenders and a nose for my car.
