Overheating Problem--Please help! 200

Hi everyone!

I have just purchased my first Volvo as a project, a 8/1980 244DL with the B21A Carburettored engine and M45 4-speed manual. It has something of a overheatig problem.. I have flushed the cooling system, which appears to be fine and replaced the thermostat (the mated surface from the block to the thermostat housing has a slight leak as the sealant I used didnt appear to seal as good as it should have, but I dont think thats the main problem) its a gradual rise to the red level on the guage of about 5 minutes. Does anyone have any ideas to this problem?
