Don't use any RTV sealant - get a new rubber gasket, like Volvodad already mentioned. It has a profile like a [ which will slip over the thermostat edge and give an excellent seal.
Also, I'd recommend that you remove the grille and feel with your hand over the radiator. Are some areas cooler than others (bad), or is it evenly warm (good)? There will be a slight top-bottom difference, but cool spots will mean a clogged rad.
