Climate Control Assembly (Defrost, re-circulate, feet) buttons 200 1988

I just bought a 1988 Volvo 240GL. It was an accident but I already love it! Anyway, One day I had the air on recirculation and "feet" pressed in. The next day I got in and I COULD NOT change the preferences. Being from Seattle, I HAD to defrost my windshield so I could drive. I ended up going really really slow and the next day I removed the glove box and removed the spring holding the vent closed and I removed the other one too.
The problem is, I need to get those buttons working again. Anyone heard of this problem or how to fix it?
