164 no start, no spark 140-160 1975

I got my car home from the mechanic last night. It sounded like it was only running on 4 cyl. So I pulled the plugs and #1 and #3 were black, the others looked good. Because the mechanic was playing with the distributer, I checked to see if it was tight and the cap wasn't seated properly. Fearing bad things, like rotor touching, I waited until this morning to take the cap off.
All is well, my new cap and rotor were undamaged. I put it all back together and it wouldn't start!
I did find 2 injectors unplugged, #1 and#3 which might make it run a bit rough. Then I pulled the wire off of #1 plug and hit the starter. No spark. So I pulled the coil wire off the dist, and held it near the firewall and still nothing. I thought 40,000 volts would peel some paint!
The engine turns over easily and fast enough.
What should I check first? I smell fuel and hear the fuel pump working. I wish I were a mechanic, but wishing doesn't make it so. This is all on-the-job learning and I am tired of being burned. I did put all of the wires on the dist correctly and #1 wire is in the correct slot (not 180 off).

Thanks,
Klutz Klaus
