My dash is not only cracked, now the vinyl is bubbling up from the foam, so I've been checking out some options. Just to be helpful, here's what I've found: http://www.dashmat.com/ sells, not only three kinds of Dash cover for 240s, but also (man, I wish I'd known this several months ago) carpet rear deck covers for the 240, in about a dozen colors.
JC Whitney's catalog advertises Accu-form Dashcaps, which "won't crack or warp!" by their own words. I'd like to see some kind of warranty on that, but at least it's more promising than IPD's plastic molded cap which, according to thier catalog may "begin warping in just a few months and it could begin cracking inside of a year." That diagnosis has been reported by a couple end users of the ABS dash cap as well, so I don't really want to waste money on one.
Another point in favor of the Accu-form dash cap (oddly) is the price; they cost around $100 for the plain black one and a little more for colored plastic. IPD wants $80 for their's. I've never known IPD to offer super-saver bargains, in fact, though they certainly have a valuable place in the Volvo community, if you can find something anywhere else, there's a good chance it'll be cheaper. Which says to me that the dash cap offered by IPD is likely of a lower quality.
The Accu-form dash cap also offers a '93 cap, IPD specifically says that their ABS cap is for '81-'92 240s. I suspect though that even the Accu-form version would have a cut-out for the faux speaker cover.
A very generous Brickboard member sent me a carpet dash cover a couple weeks ago - thanks again! - but I've since given it to Dad - who rather likes it - and so I'm thinking about getting a hard plastic cover one of these days. Actually, I'd rather do a little research and solve the problem of the cracking dash once and for all, but I don't have a spare and even jukyard dash boards would cost about the same as a cover, I'll bet.
I believe someone said that pre-airbag dash boards won't swap with the later ones, is that true? If I can find a dash that will fit my '93 - regardless of how trashed it may be - I may try to find a way to re-build it from scratch. I know, there are people out there that offer this service, and I may go to one of them one day, but I hate paying someone else to do work that I can learn to do myself. I think it's the learning I enjoy as much as the results.
