Okay, Here's the deal. I bought an '83 245 last Friday 2 weeks after a guy totaled out my '84 245. During my usual season of miscellaneous neglected repairs I noticed that the left front strut I guess was collapsed because the bottom spring support mount was burying itself into the top of the tire and had been rubbing on the tire for quite sometime. Well, I go out to my '84 parts car and remove the whole strut assembly with brake asembly included. during removal you need to remove the 2 brake lines from the hoses that are mounted on the side of the strut housing. The problem is that the fittings that require an 11mm wrench are made of a soft brass. I had to remove some of these lines on one other job awhile back and I purchased a set of craftsman metric line wrenches that had an 11mm included. Even when using the line wrench, the wrench would spread and mangle a couple of the fittings to the point where I had to cut the lines and replace them with ones from the parts car. Luckily(and I use that term loosely), the lines that were trashed upon removal on the parts car and my '83 weren't the same ones so I had all of the parts to complete the job but I spent an hour drilling and chiseling the brass fitting out of the end of the brake hose. The problem, as I see it, Is that the line is made of brass and the hose fitting is made of steel so there must be some dissimilar metal corrosion going on in there. I'd rather do a dozen heater blower motor jobs than do this one again! Is there a better tool for removing these lines without distorting them? The local Volvo mechanic told me once that he has a Snap-on 11mm line wrench that does the trick. I do know that sometimes you have to go with Snap-on or some other more expensive tool because in the cae of Snap-on they use a better quality(harder perhaps) steel in there wrenches and such. I don't know for sure. but I do know that the craftsman line wrenches are a piece of s**t IMHO and they will be going back to Sears. Sorry for such a long post.
