Charging Woes 120-130 1966

Last Friday night I had a "first" with the 'ol 122. I was stranded with a dead battery....the first of many, no doubt. I got a jump and made it home to the trusty battery charger. I should note that my B20 engine was upgraded to a 55 amp Bosch alternator 11 years ago. I had the battery load tested, and checked out OK. I went ahead and changed the battery terminal clamps (old ones were a bit weathered). I also made sure the battery terminals were clean. Just about an hour ago I ran an errand and the battery was dead when I tried to fire up for the drive home. Halfway home, my dashlights/headlights went from very dim to totally bright. I haven't had the alternator off and checked out yet (and haven't had any experience with bad charging). Yeah, newbie here! After reaching home I shut the car off for a while, came back to it and it started with no problem. Anyone out there think of other possible problems? Can the voltage regulator be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg
