So, after giving the old tank one last chance (i.e. this is the last big wedge I spend on her before I give up and get something more economical)
driving along yesterday - for a while the back end has felt a little loose - like I have one flat tyre - have to slow down more then normal for corners etc - but I put it down to bad road conditions and wind.
Then the gear box starts doing all sorts of interesting things as I accelerate onto the motorway. Into a high gear, nope dont like that. Try a low one - nope!
Then it sounds like I have a puncture (which would make sense with the way the back is behaving) more and more virabration and noise from underneath. So check her out on the hard shoulder (expecting to find a flat) everything looks ok. I carefully drive her to the next junction (only a few hundred yard) even though the auto box is changing ok there is loads of noise and when I stop (which was very abrupt) there is a fair amount of smoke coming from underneath the middle to back of the car.
The back of the car is covered with a thick layer of water and oil and it stinks of hot metal.
I suspected a goosed diff.
Would you folks agree?
If it is how much to fix and is it worth it because at the moment I have just about reached the last straw with this money pit.
Thanks.
John.
