Bentley math on valve clearances.....huh? 200

It's been awhile since I last checked the valve clearances on the 240s, and having nothing better to do today than read the Bentley 240 manual, I thought I'd read the section on adjusting valve clearances. Maybe I'd pick up a tip on how to make it a simpler procedure. Following proper procedure is important, right? Now, maybe I was taught math the old fashioned way so I am just not getting it right.....or could it be that the Bentley manual is a tad goofy on this matter? On page 214-3, the "Example" given seems to have a slight discrepancy when double-checking their subtraction. Not a big deal, only a hundredth of a millimeter off, probably a typo methinks. Okay, so on the next page, 214-4, the "Example" given attempts to explain how to calculate the thickness of replacement shims. Prior to the actual "Example", the statements are made, "A thicker disc reduces valve clearance. A thinner disc increases valve clearance." So far, so good. But then, the example inexplicably proceeds to claim that using a thinner replacement disc than the one being removed will rectify an excessive clearance issue. Again, maybe it's just my old-fashioned way of figuring out a math problem, but this new Bentley math seems bass-ackwards. Maybe someone with a better math mind than mine can explain their "have it both ways" method of calculating the correct size of adjusting discs?
