Got this '86 745 a month ago with no history and 230K miles and an M46 tranny. Clutch cable broke after before I had driven 1000 miles and I found that the "knob" at the top end had broken off end of the cable, right where it enters the knob. This allowed the steel block at the other end to fall out and go bouncing back behind the car. Fortunately I retrieved it. Unfortunately, the FAQ has little on clutch cables.
My questions are:
The cable appeared to be very new. Is there anything that might have caused this one to break that would also break a new one?
How does one install a new cable. Do you snake it through from the bottom and put the knob on the top end after?
That steel block with the groove gets the lower end of the cable through it and is then just held in by the tension on the cable when it's properly installed, right?
