PCV Valve... Needed? 120-130

I was trying to trace my obnoxious knocking noise in an otherwise perfect motor and removed my PCV hose from the oil/flame trap briefly. I was shocked when the motor suddenly reved up and began to idle much more smoothly than it has since I brought it home. It also stopped that stupid clicking noise my NOS PCV valve has been making since I installed it.

So... my question is... aside from preventing excessive oil being pulled into the intake, why do I need a PCV valve if it prevents the engine from running smoothly.

I guess the counter question is, what is wrong that my engine only runs smooth w/o a PCV valve in place?

Note that I still have a 1-way valve in place to protect my brake booster/servo unit..
