122 Tank Sender bad? 120-130 1965

Hello,

My 122's fuel gauge has suddenly started going crazy, with the needle tapping loudly against the stop when the fuel in the tank moves. It always moved, but not like this. I did the gauge test by disconnecting the lead and got the normal full tank signal on the gauge, then grounded the lead to get a full tank signal, so is it safe to assume the sender is bad?
