Okay, since I've had several different threads about my plight in this conversion I thought it was time to start another. Here's the latest. I
replaced the FPR with a new Bosch unit from IPD today. No change. Since I've had this car running it's been running rough no matter what I've done so far.
To give you all a quick summary, I have replaced everything in the fuel system except for the filter and the tank pre-pump. As for the ignition system I've
replaced everything new except for the ICU and the distributor itself (including the hall sensor). First, when I got this car to run, it ran rough
and there was black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. I adjusted the distributor and was able to get the black smoke to quit but the engine still
ran rough. I then played around with adjusting the distributor a tooth one way and then the other to see if perhaps I was a tooth off or something. I've got it
to the place where it runs about as good as it's going to get for now. I then connected a timing light up but there isn't a reference mark on the crank pulley
I felt the inner and outer rims of the pulley trying to feel for a groove or a notch or something. How do you use a timing light without a reference mark?
So I disconnected the timing light and decided to pull one spark plug wire at a time and see if that changed things any. I got to the second wire back from the
front and it made no difference in how the engine ran. So I then removed the spark plug only to find that the tip was completely soot covered black. I then
installed the plugwire back onto the plug and started the engine with that second plug near the engine block and I saw that there was plenty of spark.
So I cleaned the plug and reinstalled it and the wire but it still runs the same. I also along the way tried seeing how the engine ran with the air mass
meter disconnected and it was the same. So what do you guys think I should do next? I mean since the engine runs the same with that second plugwire pulled
then wouldn't you think it has something to do with that cylinder? Since I have black soot then that should indicate that it's getting fuel in there and since
I've verified that I have spark there what else can it be? I'm baffled at this point. And as always, any and all input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Charles
