Hi fellas. I am having troubles with my '88 244DL. Before I got this car it had been converted R134. Stickers everywhere. A/C is not working. Here are the initial symptoms to help you narrow it down for me. When I crank the car and let it idle a bit I will turn the a/c knob (no toggle switch on this model)to MAX and the engine tugs just a bit making me think that the compressor is engaging. NOT SO. Clutch does not engage on compressor. OK. Knowing that the a/c likely has not worked in a while I go ahead and replace the expansion valve and O rings and replace the dryer and O rings. I then drew a vacuum for about 15 minutes with my little cheapo vacuum puller hooked up to my shop compressor. Then I begin pumping 134 into the system and the compressor clutch engages, but only after the little pressure gauge on the can shows I am in the red. But it is engaged, at least. However, in the car no cool air is coming out. Not a bit. I turn off the a/c and this stops the clutch, of course. I then turn it back on the the clutch will not engage. HMMM. I go back under the car (I am 6'6") and start pumping coolant again and the clutch engages again, but the dial says it is in the red danger area of pumping too much. So I quickly go back to see if it is cooling and no joy. Do I have a bad compressor and a bad leak? Or is it something else? I am tryng to avoid taking this to an a/c shop. I do have gauges with terrible instructions. I could use some input here. Thanks!!!
