1987 240 Dl died now turns over but will not start 200

Dear Sirs,

i have owned this vehicle (1987 240 Dl) for many years it has died and i am i desperate need of wise direction to solve this mystery. It was going along fine on the expressway and then it just turned off. all of the dash lights turned on i coasted to a stop and then tried to restart it. it turns over at a pretty fast rate and at a higher than normal pitch and instead of bogging down the starter it just keeps turning over. i sprayed started fluid into air intake and it did not try to start just the rapid turn over. i do not have spark. i do not smell gas after turning over for a while. the timing belt is intact but has cracks and i can depress it by pushing on it. i have replaced the fuel pump relay in the past and more recently was having to hit the area under the glove box on the passenger side because it was kicking in to overdrive which in the past has been related to low voltage due to alternator belt slippage ( i figured out that hitting it makes the overdrive light turn off and gets the car out of high gear.)also it had been leaking oil out of the somewhere on the engine block pretty bad. so please help i am replacing the coil tonight and i have swapped out the fuel pump relay and installed a new valve cover gasket. also i started to clean every fuse in the fuse panel inside the car on the drivers side and have put a charger on the battery.

thanks,
corey
