1989 240DL dies when put in reverse 200 1989

Starts up fine, but when put in reverse car dies. Only happens after car has been driven awhile. If I haven't driven it for a couple of hours it goes into reverse just fine. Also purrs down the road in drive just fine. Any ideas what could cause this?
