Fuel Pump Replacement 700 1992

I am ready to replace a Regina(AC Delco)fuel pump, and have tried to read and view all that is available.
I have some questions.
How empty does the tank need to be?
Is the sock filter the same for all in-tank pumps? I don't see any differentiation concerning Regina systems.
What fastens the pump to the in-tank assembly?
Should I cover the solder connections with shrink-tube or will it dissolve?
Do I need to retract the spring-loaded assembly to put it back in the tank?

Frankly, I am not thrilled about doing this job around the gas and fumes. What precautions are recommended?
