I have a 1991 740, and the speedometer works some, but it won't go over 45 mph. From the junkyard, I tried swapping with another 1991 740 instrument cluster, but it had the same problem and I thought my speedometer might not be to blame. Then I tried my 1993 940 cluster in the 740. The speedometer and tach worked fine, but the gas guage did not work. I have carefully read the FAQs section about speedometer repair for the 740, and it seems a bit complicated. I thought a easier solution than locating and soldering capacitors would be to find the gas guage hook up for the 740 and use a junk 940 cluster which isn't plagued with the problems that the 740 speedometer has. The clock might not work, but the only really important things that I need from a cluster are the speedometer and gas guage. The temp guage would be nice, but it never worked on my 940 since I bought the car, and I have lived without it for 4 years. Has anyone else ever used a 940 cluster on a 740 and adapted to make the fuel gauge work?
