Shifter 200 1992

The shifter on my '92 245 is acting peculiar. With engine running, I can get it to move through gear positions simply by moving the stick back and forth. Placing the shifter in PARK is never certain. I have to be careful that car does not begin backing up. This is problematic when the spouse must drive it. And, I have a state safety inspection deadline shortly.

So, this is what I've done so far:
- removed, disassembled and cleaned the NSS.
- set up the marks on the NSS.
- replaced one missing bushing on the shifter linkage.
- tested relay (Volvo p/n 3 515 647) by replacing with spares from personal inventory. Found the relay location in lower right of center console, near the storage bin.
- repaired the ground wire to shift position indicator light (don't think this is relevant)
- brake lights work
- reverse lights WILL work. This might be a clue. If in REVERSE, I slightly move shifter fwd or back then light will come on, but will not illuminate with shifter in the mid position of REVERSE.
- battery is new, replaced this month and alternator is charging.
- attempted to follow the path of: "ignition switch - brake light switch - reverse light switch - parking shift lock relay - parking shift lock solenoid" by checking for voltage at various points.

I don't see the solenoid actuating. Should this need replacing, I'm not quite certain how to get it out of the gear shifter "bucket".

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike
