This weekend I successfully completed the head gasket replacement on my NA 940. It fired right up, and I took it out for a test drive.

I was concerned about overheating, because the previous owner stated that it had been a problem (and may have caused the head gasket failure), but the temperature gauge stayed in the safe zone for the entire trip (just a couple miles around the neighborhood).

While I had the head off, I replaced the water pump and the thermostat as a precautionary measure.

When I got home and looked under the hood, there was coolant shooting out the back of the water pump where a hard metal line (from the transmission?) connects at the rear of the pump. I did install a new gasket on that connection during the water pump install, but it appears that it wasn't seated correctly, or it blew out.

Did I get it installed incorrectly, or does this indicate another problem?

Also, I noticed that the electric fan was only running periodically - is this normal?

The FAQ states that I should change the heater control valve as a precaution - any other parts/pieces to check? One more thing - there wasn't a thermostat installed when I disassembled the front of the engine for the head gasket - is this a clue (I installed a new one)?
