Refinishing alloy wheels . . . calling all metalurgists!

What is the best way to prepare alloy wheels for painting? In the past I've used airplane stripper to get all the clear coat off and most of the old paint but, man-oh-man, what a nasty project that was! Have a sand blaster but have never used it for stripping alloy wheels; never gave it any thought until now.

But is the alloy too soft resulting in the wheels being pitted by the sand? Will a finer sand produce good results? Have got the 5 spoke turbo wheels which appear to be hard enough to sustain being blasted but not too sure and am hesitant until hearing from the metalurgists amongst us.

Regards,
