My '86 (b230f, m46) started "whining" in gear a few days ago. I first noticed it when I was coasting to a stop in 2nd from about 25mph with the clutch disengaged. I can't hear it with the trans. engaged, probably because the motor is louder, but if I declutch at speed in any gear, it's there. Varies with the speed of the car and gear. In other words, if I shift into a higher gear the whine decreases until I hit the top of that gear. So it would seem to me that it is definitely the tranny, or at least related to the tranny.
I'm kind of wondering if it might also have something to with the recent cold spell that we've had here in California (high 20s-low 30s and the car sits outside overnight). The "whine" is definitely more pronounced in the mornings. Would switching to motor oil (10-30) or a synthetic help? It has regular old ATF in it now.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks.
