Sigh... After many hours of work I got everything put back together on my 544/M41 (overdrive) swap. The tranny was an unknown quantity - being bought for $100 off eBay. The gears looked decent with the top off so I didn't go to the trouble of trying to swap output shafts and use my good M40.
So took it for the first spin last night. The gears are nice and quiet. The OD works great. And the 2nd and 4th syncros are just perfect - they don't linger, but are quick without the slightest hint of a grind. BUT 1st and 3rd syncros are totally absent. I'm pretty much resigned to pulling the tranny back out and working on it, but thought I float the question around if there is anything easily fixed that might cause this problem. I don't think it is wear - usually 2nd gear will wear out first - not 1st and 3rd.
I filled the tranny with Mobil 1 10W30 synthetic oil.
