transmission questions 200 1987

Since I have no idea when the trans. on my new 87 was serviced last I did decide to have the transmission fluid flushed and replaced. To me the fluid looked red before the flush, that is until I saw what it is supposed to look like. I was told that the fluid was in pretty bad shape. Now I'm paranoid.

Here's how transmission reacts and has since I've had the car. When I put it in gear, any gear, it goes into gear smoothly. Normal driving it seems to shift at the proper intervals though sometimes it downshifts and takes a second to release. I was thinking maybe this was a sticky kickdown cable so I lubed it but it shifts the same. If I'm a bit more aggresive with the pedal it seems to shift a bit quicker. Still the kickdown cable? Should I be worried about said previous state of fluid? Anything in particular I should look for?

thanks to all in advance
