SPEEDOMETER JUMPING 700

My speedometer jumps between gears , as you are driving down the road when the gears change ,example from 2 to 3rd gear the speedometer will show a lot higher speed , than it will drop down to its normal speed . Any ideas please help, this only started to happen after I went to a mechanic and had the sending unit in the rear replaced ,( the old one finally went , he suggested check behind the dash but said this would cost mucho dineiro. Is there a relay any other thing that might be causing the fluctiation in speedometer.
