odometer failure causes check engine light? 200 1992

Speedometer works fine,odometer gave up 6 years ago.Volvo dealership claims that since odometer does not function the computer thinks the car is going 10mph all the time and the engine management system cannot function.Did not have a problem the first 5 years.Any merit to this or is dealership fishing for answers?
