That sounds absurd. The small drive gear for the odometer is most likely broken (very common) and it only functions to turn the mileage counter. There is no relationship with the check engine diagnostic system. That is one of the "better" stories I have heard. Must be nice profit in a new speedometer head, what $700 or so?
