odometer failure causes check engine light? 200 1992

According to Bentley, a missing Vehicle Speed Signal will NOT cause the "check engine" light to illuminate. It will set code 3-1-1, however.

Since your speedometer is working, then the vehicle speed sensor is working, and your odometer has a mechanical problem (likely a broken gear).

I do not believe that the ECU "cannot function" without the vehicle speed signal. As far as I can tell, its only purpose is to tell the ECU when to set the upshift light in cars with a manual transmission (besides the speedo/odo, of course).
