How does a knock sensor 'talk' to the car?

Hello,

I was thinking about what a knock sensor does and was wondering, does it just have 2 states, 1) sensing a knock, and 2) not sensing a knock? I was thinking it would be helpful to have one with just a tell-tale light or whatever on my cars. That way, when the light came on, I could tell that at that RPM range and throttle position, there was too much advance. Certainly would be helpful in getting things set right. They are screwed into the block, I know. Where? Anyway, just a thought.
