How does a knock sensor 'talk' to the car?

I don't really know much about knock sensors but here's how I think it works: (russian accent)-"KNOCK! KNOCK! Back off timing! back off!!"

I think the sensor is tuned to a frequency which is sent to the computer and the computer determines if the frequency is correct to be indicating knock. Thats why when you over or under tighten the sensor it gives false signals.
