AT wont shift out of 2nd !!! 700 1987

I have an 87 760 T with an AT. AW70 -- I think, it has overdrive. All of a sudden today it decided to not shift out of second gear. In addition, When I am driving in 2nd gear at around 40 mph (4k rpm) and then take my foot off the gas, the rpms drop to idle speed and the car just coasts. The transmission will re-engage when I bring the rpms up to the appropriate level. The fluid level is fine. might it be the downshift cable or something more serious??

BTW, the shift from 1st to second is happening a lot later than normal and is very hard.
