engine knock in my V6 700

i seem to be getting a knocking/tapping sound from my car, it's an 85/86 it's an upper levle tapp i guess but when goin down the freeway u can hear it change tones, it kind of remind me of a mitter patter, But, it has a ushol tone and only some times does it change tones then it changes back to normal then maby a half mile later it changes aginfor a second or so. ideas? any body?
