engine knock in my V6 700

it seemed to start all at once and has just been getting louded over the last 1k miles, i do apriceate you're info, how do i adjust the valve lash? is it hard for a novice, are there any tools/parts i'll need other than the gaskets?
my mechanic told me around $270 to adjust the valves and i can get new gaskets for $30 for both sides what else will i need? shims? or is it a bolt i can just tighten/losen?
