I have been using a 63 544 as a daily driver since July. The brakes on all four corners got new shoes and cylinders when I first go the car. The brakes have been functioning fine when driving.
The emergency brake would engage but it never held the car on a substantial grade by itself. I always had to park the car in gear and pray for good fortune if I had to park on a steep hill.
Yesterday morning it was quite cold. After releasing the emergency brake the car backed out of the driveway fine. However, the brake was definitely engaged when trying to go forward. I kept pulling the handle up and letting it down in hopes of releasing the brake to no avail. Pumping the brake pedal did not help either.
As I only had a short drive to the train station, I kept on going and the braking effect let up after a hundred yards or so. After parking I noticed the distinct smell of hot brake shoes at the rear passenger wheel. I stuck the car in gear and did not engage the emergency brake for the day.
On returning that evening, the brakes were fine. This morning, the emergency brake was stuck on again for a short distance. Can anyone suggest where to start troubleshooting the brake drag?
Thanks,
Joe
